    Description

One dozen extra large prickly pear fruits.  Each fruit range from slightly under 2 inches long to slightly over 3 inches long.
These are from Opuntia ficus-indica plants.  As far as I know these are the largest variety of prickly pear that grow in North America.  This variety of prickly pear does not have thorns.  Rather both the plant and especially the fruit are covered in glochids.  We have exposed the fruit to an open flame to burn off most of the glochids.  The pears should still be handled with care as there will be a few remaining glochids and they are unpleasant to get stuck with.
Once peeled you can eat the prickly pear whole, cut up, or even pureed and
    strained
as a juice. Although it takes a lot of work,
    prickly pear jelly
is a flavorful way of enjoying this fruit.  Prickly pear fruit contain seeds.  The seeds are edible but they are too hard to chew.  You can either swallowed them or spit them out or use a juicer to eliminate them.
We harvest these daily as they ripen.  They will keep at room temperature up to a week but should be eaten soon.  Once fully ripe, refrigerating will add a few more days of freshness.
