The Golden Berry also known as Physalis peruviana or Incan Berry is a South American plant native to Colombia, Ecuador and Peru in the Solanaceae family. It grows in the high peaks of the Peruvian Alps, in clusters like a vine and is covered by a thin paper-like casing. Once the berries are harvested and removed from their shells, they are gently dried at low temperatures to retain nutrients and keep their vitamins and minerals intact. They can be eaten as snacks or in combination with other foods, such as goji berries, cacao nibs, etc. They can be added to sweets, smoothies or breakfast cereals. They are full of Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Iron, Niacin and Phosphorus and have a high content of protein, rare for a fruit.
